48÷2(9+3) = 48÷[2x(9+3)] = 2
The 2 alongside the parenthesis without an "x" sign means that it is "connected to" that parenthesis, and MUST multiply whatever total is within the parenthesis. This is not open to interpretation. It is a basic rule.
For the result to be 288, the equation would be written :
48÷2x(9+3) or equivalent.
