Good grief! Aren't there more important things in life to get your blood pressure up about? With the unfortunate exception of voting, it is common to show ID for a lot of things nowadays. This going down the tubes fast country is absolutely full of crooks at every level. Get used to it boys, it ain't going to get any better. By the way, you can avoid the ID check if you pay with cash.
