Rear Lid Remote Release

Hi All:
I have recently acquired a 1985 928s Automatic, Canadian car. It seems to be in reasonable shape and runs well. My previous toy was a frame-up rebuild of a 1959 Triumph TR3A my first experience beyond replacing spark plugs.
The 928 is a whole new level of complexity, and I thought as a introduction to the intricacies or German engineering, I might start by replacing the rear lid remote operator which has ceased to function, for which the previous owner had kindly supplied a replacement drive motor: per the manual instructions (Vol. 5 , Page 55) , I duly removed the mounting bolts of the motor bracket, and gently removed the motor, expecting to have to unclip the brass-coloured operating rod, but instead the operating rod just fell out, obviously unattached at either end. With the aid of a flashlight and mirror, I was able the see the probable attachment point for the upper end of the rod, but it was very short and appeared to have no means of securing the rod, such as a cir-clip or similar.
At this point I would I would have liked to remove the lower section of the lock attached to the rear sill of the trunk, to have a better look at the attachment point, but when I removed the two attaching screw/bolts, I could only extract it a short distance before it caught on something. I am reluctant to apply any force to this at this point, and I wondered whether there is something else I need to undo, other than any wiring before it will come out?
