I have been lucky and got to work the pits for the Baja 1k a handful of times.
The tires are mainly to get you to the next pits if you have a flat. I know that sounds dumb but....
We were 50 miles away from the next pit, an on the race course, that was just 1.5 hrs away for most of the racers. Longer if you have a flat!
