My vote is fixed blade with a good guard. Until he is comfortable and has developed proper handling technique the guard will protect him from poor grip and sliding his hand down onto the blade.
If you go locking blade make sure it's not of a type that has too strong a release so he's not forced to release it in a way that the blade collapses on him.
FWIW my first knife which I still own was fixed blade with a guard.
