It doesn't have to be bittersweet, tweeze. We talk to our son every week. We see him whenever we go to SoCal, and will eventually live about a 25 minute drive away from him when we finally retire out there. The relationship with him is different now than when he was living at home. Less parental, more like very close adult friends.
We talk about all the various things he has to deal with in life. We give him advice when he wants it, and try not to tell him how to do things/live his life. Parenting becomes much more subtle.
