Thats a myth propogated by those who dont understand the system.
The oil level on a 911 is measured dynamically as oil is flowing in and out of the tank. The reason you check it at operating temp is so the thermostat is fully open and the spec is written for that.
At different temps the stat may only be partially open therefore changing the reading .
That explains why it is only the oil in your 911 that expands so much while hot and not your ford or gm

Of course it does expand when hot like most substances but i would say in the order of percentage points
