In the old days, where I come from...a fight was where two fellows squared off (in general either could have walked off)...we would have never called a younger, larger, more athletic man jumping and beating a chubby older man who put up little or no resistance. We called that an assault (or attempted murder) and the perpetrator an animal/criminal.

If there was just one punch....and then the initiator walked away...I could agree that Zimmerman was out of line to shoot and his life was not in danger (although Martin should still have been charged with assaut and battery). One cannot be expected to lie on their back and get savegly beaten and coolly determine the point just before he dies to defend himself. Few armed people would have taken the beating Zimmerman did.
