The Spanish Republic attracted many foreign volunteers to fight against Franco's troops in the Spanish Civil War. These volunteers were orgaized in the International Brigades which were many times used as cannon fodder since being volunteers they were more proactive in battle (and expendable!!!).
The funny thing is that since having these International Brigades gave the Republic a lot of international prestige, they began filling them up with Spanish conscripts. So my grandfather ended up in one of these brigades with comrades from around the globe. Fortunately he survived the war but he participated in many of the worst bloodbaths.
