The issue is respect. Respect is putting others before yourself.
I take my hat off when indoors, especially at a dinner table. I put my hand over my heart and face the flag during the national anthem.
My grandparents taught me to do that. They were born in the early 1900s and were sent to concentration camps during WWII. They lost everything. They were loyal American citizens and were absolute in the belief that this is the greatest country in the history of the world. They had respect for the sacrifice that their fellow Americans were making during the war, and they taught me to do the same. I am grateful for that. Out of respect for the memory of those who served, died, and to whom I owe my freedom, I remove my hat.
