Great ideas, thanks!
In compiling my thoughts, I've wondered about how someone should answer this question when asked about your own home town. Like I would do if someone came over here.
It's all about time:
Limited stay, see the key sights, you will be the tourist. Tick it off the list
1 month stay: get your geography together and decide where you want to go.
1 year stay: You begin to understand how your Fun country, thinks and works, start wondering about how you would/could/if fit in. Stay, but probably move on.
10 years: Never done that as a tourist. The Biggie in terms of possibility, but age dependent.
A Life: My parents came here from the UK. I was 2 years old. They are not keen on sharing their experiences! Our family has stayed, and I have raised a young family here.
FWIW, Auckland Styles in one day. I thought: see some volcanic cones for perspective, avoid the city centre, enjoy a bbq with the locals in summer and go by ferry to the Devonport beaches. Ask questions, people will be accommodating. Kiwis, any further?
