I had my Hotmail account hacked a few years ago. I had no idea how or when it got hacked. It was infected by some malware (I assume) that sent out strange political stuff to people on my contact list. I reported the account as hacked to Hotmail, & they promptly shut it down. I emailed them I had notified them about the account being hacked and asked for it to be reopened & for them to clean it if possible. After about 3 to 4 weeks, I got it back cleaned of the malware.
