My son just got an Asus Quad Core i7 laptop - $650 complete Windows 8 and MS Office.
I'm a beliver in get the better as these things become obsolete within months.
He ruins it - he buys the next one. He is also paying for his first year of school. He took out a $14K loan to fund it. He fails - the monkey is on his back. He suceeds, his mom and I will fund the rest.
