How about a Beretta 92fs?

Took me 20 yrs. to stop hating Glocks and a 23 in .40 has been my daily carry gun for about two years now. They're an acquired taste, but they check all the boxes:
cheap
dead nuts reliable, indestructible, really
accurate
simple
come in many calibers
can take lots of accessories
No, it's nothing fancy and the trigger pull sucks compared to my SIGs or 1911s. But it gets the job done, I have about $400 into mine and, if I ever lose it, it will be very east to replace.
BTW, a poly frame gun will usually kick a little more than steel frames. Practice and trying out many guns is the key to success here. I wouldn't bet my life on a .380. They kick a lot more than people expect because so many of those guns are designed around the caliber. So they're small and plastic, which makes them jump and kick when put to use.
