just disconnect your battery, jack your car up (right), and and it's only a few bolts here and there. Don't worry, it's fairly simple once you've done it. Haynes manuals has projects like these, and they're cheap. Not real descriptive, but they steer you in the right direction.
As far as starters go, last year I replaced mine, and when looking for one($2-300...) I wasn't sure If i was going to need a solenoid too, so I thought I'd go to rebuilder (starter/alt) to have it checked. The guy said it was fine, and he could rebuild the starter for $30. WHOA! He didn't know what car it was from, so i told him. He said "Ya sure, but it's still just a Bosch starter." -Makes sense 'cause they don't rebuild the housing!!
Did my Altinater later for the same. Check you local rebuilder (don't say what its off of unless they ask- they might think it's worth more).
