The NCAA does not allow Div 1 student athletes to just go get a job to pay for extra crap. I think they finally loosened the rule slightly a few years ago and now allow them to work until they gross somewhere in the neighborhood of $2k if they meet all of the other restrictions. Whatever the number is it is small and it is absolutely all they are allowed to earn on or off campus during the academic year.
