I run into that problem all the time with any type of quick connect fittings designed to keep refrigerant in the hose. For standard R12 fittings, I always use regular hoses. No real loss on the low side as long as the compressor is running when you remove it and you're not second guessing yourself when pulling a vacuum. If you have at least one standard hose, ditch those 134a adapters. Or try a different brand of 134a adapter. Some of the cheaper ones are known to cause problems.
FREON is nothing more than a generic name owned by DuPont. It does not specifically mean R12.
