It almost sounds as if you were saying that otherwise you planed on welding the backing plates to the interior side of the firewall. My bad.

Well, it was was a bit confusing the way I worded it. I changed that sentence to read as follows;

"Had I opted to paint the chassis prior to finding the OEM GT reinforcement plates, that would have been a disaster, probably costing me a whole lot more money by welding them in place and then having to repaint that entire area..."
