Try doing the upgrades first. The router probably receives the update but you have to allow it to run. It just makes it easier for the user. You don't have to go to the website and find the updates for your specific router yourself. Do them in the sequence that they are listed....oldest first. It may help.
I've had Linksys and Netgear. No problems with either.
