When I was a resident, we'd have morning rounds with our attendings. If you were on the service responsible for the patients belonging to the department chairman, he'd be there on daily morning rounds. During patient presentations, if something didn't go well with a patient, if you didn't know the answer to a question asked of you, if you were pimped (asked a theoretical question) and hemmed or hawed with the answer, you'd likely hear the department chair increasingly impatiently jingling change in his pocket. Over the years we all developed a Pavlovian discomfort with that sound. After awhile I started to wonder: Where the heck did he stop on his way to work every day that he would have a pocketful of change at 7 in the morning?
