I did the Conversion on Howards Car because i like the Task to do it and i sell a lot of 3.6 Engines for Conversions to the US and it is nice to know what it takes to do it and give some help to the Buyers .
Howard seemed to be a nice Guy and it turned out he is ,Money wasnt a point at all for me .The Engine ( 993 ) and a Kit would have been the same Money .I didnt use a Kit because i have a Warehouse full of Porsche , i am well set up with Tools Parts and pretty good knowledge about 911s .
Can you do it below 10 K ? That is hard on the Edge i would say if figure 3-4 K for the Kit and some extra stuff (clutch , welding Exhaust etc.) you can if you do it yourself . If you have it done , Figure about 50 Hrs. of Work for a good Mechanic with the Kit to start with !!
Even here in Germany (Metric ,cm and Liters ) it was a lot of chasing Parts ( adapters,Tubes, Hoses etc.) Dont even think about it in the US
( inches,Feet and Gallons) buy a Kit instead .
Since Howard was on a Budget and the Clutch looked very new we decided to give it a Try . Forget it and buy a Clutch ( Sachs Powerclutch or so ) I fabricated a Gas Cable and a Guidingtube trough the Tunnel ,
better buy one ( PMS )even so it is 200 $ .
We found that the 993 Heatexchangers and cat is a good Alternative for a Muffler ,and you can quite it down by the Diameter of the Tips . I used 65mm ( 2,5 inch) instead of 3,5 inch with a muffler .I also installed the
Heating System .
With a early 964 Engine you can be between 9-10 K , with a late 964 or a 993 you will be between 10-11 K ,Varioram 12-14 K . This are DIY Numbers and some good Friends to help .
Have Fun : harald
