I think that there are people who like convertibles and those who don't in this world. I was recently given one as a gift; I'm definitely not a top-down fan other than on warm evenings or nights. If someone drives around L.A. with their top down everyday, their cancer risk is about the same as having a job removing asbestos from old factories and doing it with no mask. IOW, guaranteed.
With 911s, my biggest complaint with the cabriolets, (and targas), is that they eliminate the most beautiful and defining feature of the styling of the car, which is the roof line and side windows. You take that away and you have half the car, and not the right half, IMO. The new 991 has fixed that somewhat with a beautiful roof line on the cabriolet but most of the older ones look very chunky and horrible with the top up.
There are plenty of other cars that were originally styled to be open top cars, (Alfa spyder comes to mind), that look great as rag tops, opened or closed. The air-cooled 911s all look like aftermarket chop jobs to me, the top just doesn't work with the car and they look like someone took a sawzall to them with it down. Pretty harsh, I know...but these are aesthetic cars, not grocery getters.
