It acts like it's gonna overheat going up close to red, then it goes back down to 3/4 ways, then down to 1/2 midway, then after 20 min on highway it goes down to just above 1/4 way. The first line.

I cant deal with this. How can I check if I'm really running hot or if this is just electrical?

Would installing an aftermarket numbered gauge be a good option. I am new to this car so need direction from people who know.
"Water Wetter" , maybe a "dirty ground", "radiator fan switch bad", a couple of possibilities.

How about:
1. A pocket of air in the cooling system? Search for bleeding the cooling system.
There must be hundreds of posts on the topic.

2. The 924S has an engine temp sensor that is directly wired to the dash temp guage.
It is on the top of the engine in the front with a single blade connector. Do not damage this sensor, a new sensor is about $65. 944s do not have this part.
Clean it.

3. The thermostat and fan switch should be a matched pair. So if you get a typical 80* thermostat you should have a ~80* fan switch. How do you know what is in the car? Get a expensive pair of snap ring pliers and remove the thermostat from the water pump to check.

3a. I use a ~70*C thermostat with a ~70-75*C fan switch. Summer temps in AZ get to a "normal" 110*F for 4 months. My temp guage sits at about half during hot city and freeway driving. Cooler months at 1/4.

4. If your car is running RICH--meaning too much fuel. you will overheat.
4a. Bad O2 sensor.
4b. Bad DME engine temp sensor (get a $20 Bosch and not a cheap URO or aftermarket)
4c. Leaky injectors--get your injectors cleaned and rebuilt at www.witchhunter/com

5. What else? Wrong temp plugs, battery going bad, head gasket, rings, automatic transmission load. AC compressor or freon load ????????????.

Just a couple of things to check.
