I love this thread. I started out as a kid in the back seat of my Dad's 77 911s, he's had the car since new. He was never much of a car guy, he bought the car cause he thought it was fun to drive and wanted to get himself a nice car. Years ago we dropped the car off at a shop owned by a friend of ours for a total restoration. Dad tells his friend "Take your time, I'm not in a rush to get the car back" so 15 years, a total strip down and repaint, lost sunroof for 5 years, and hunt for a new steering wheel later we got the car back.
My dad and I haven't always had the best relationship, but I've always remembered getting picked up from school, riding in the back seats, how the engine sounded, and even how beat up the car was. Periodically visiting the car and chatting with the mechanics was something we always did together. Over the years i became more and more of a "car guy" taking apart and working on my car and providing advice to my dad for things to make sure to watch out for on his 911.
This summer we got the car back. With it back my dad and I go on trips together, we talk more, and he's enjoying seeing the car make me as happy as it made him years ago. These days hes injured his hip, so getting in and out is painful for him, as is operating the clutch, so he usually leaves it to me to drive him around town. While my mom isnt a fan of the car anymore, she does appreciate what its done for our relationship so she tolerates it. Upkeep of the car is my responsibility now, and some day I will get to become its caretaker. But right now I'm in grad school and its much better to keep the car in my parents garage.
These cars are so addictive, since ours is restored to original condition aside from the color change and tail I've told him he probably shouldn't go too crazy with it. But I do want to get my hands on another 911 and build up a engine for it and go nuts with it.
