Although I am currently enjoying my old Miata, I know what you mean about the flat six experience. There are times when I miss the old E a little bit, but not as often since I got the MX5.

If the flat six is what you want, ignore the 944 proponents. As stated above, the 944 is probably a better car than an old 911, but is in no way the same experience. Buy what you want.
Keep your eyes open. Jake (notfarnow) came across a mid-year 911 last spring and, last time he reported in, was having some fun getting it up-and-running.

I will say the Miata with the top down is as close as I have ever been to the joy of riding a motorcycle.

Sorry, I don't mean to bash the Miata... I guess I am just having a bit of buyers remorse.
