Yes. It was from a doctor, no less. He made some disparaging comment about AMG Mercedes and such--asked me if I had one. It didn't dawn on me at first, but later on I realized he must have been referring to my partner (the one who made the deal with this guy) who drove an SL550 (non-AMG, but $$$ car nonetheless).

BTW, I was driving in the Berkshires a number of years ago...

The Berkshires have Lime Rock. Not an area not used to seeing cool cars. The parking lot at LRP can be as interesting as the paddock sometimes.
Fortunately, in LA people see enough Porsches and other exotica on a daily basis that an older 911 rarely draws much attention. Heck, most people probably just pity us for not being able to afford something newer. But driving around in my 930 when I lived in PDX or New England was a bit different, attention-wise. It's what it must be like to date a supermodel or pop star. I don't think I've ever come across a hater who was willing to share his/her feelings with me, though.
edit: OK, once I came across a hater. In Bakersfield. Two office buildings share a parking lot. I guess there's an unofficial understanding that you use "your" half of the parking lot. A couple hours after I got to one office, the office got a call asking if the owner of the Porsche would move his car. Hmm. Maybe that I reconsider it, perhaps doctors
are the biggest dix around.
