having lived in almost every part of the US, I think there is a latitudinal gradient in wealth display

you see it a lot in the south - all the way across the US, from FL to LA

you see little of it up here - everyone attributes that to "timber money" which was always quiet money, and later to the back to the land hippie movement, but it fits right in with the gradient

in Louisiana, people fall all over themselves to have a house on a boulevard so other people will see it (and the fake Gothic columns) - sometimes the back of the house isn't even bricked but the front always is (to show off)

up here, people try hard to get a house on a back street so it will be quiet and not have any traffic; also the houses look like nothing from the outside, but the insides are always well appointed and very comfy
