In general, in the US, I find that people are not terribly envious. They usually go "that guy has money, he must be smart / working hard" etc. Then the folks work harder themselves to keep up with the Joneses.
The east coast is special. People are overall not very nice dealing with strangers, I have found.

I lived in Laguna Beach for 2 years. I moved here from there about a year ago.
Once my car broke down on me at PCH & Newport Center Blvd. Dude driving by yells "ha-ha" at me.
People in VT have been very friendly towards me. There's a mix of nice people and a-holes everywhere you go. YMMV.
When I see someone in a really nice newer 911 or Ferrari or something, I really wonder what they do for a living. And why can't I think of something as lucrative
