My guess is he was looking too forward and possibly saw the continuation of the track on the other side of the water or saw another road on the other side of the water. Maybe he saw what looked like a straight away (but it wasn't).

Also, if you slow the video down, it does look like he turns the wheel (at the last point we can see the front wheels) but unfortunately, they are already locked up and steering is useless.
