Nah, from the pic I think these fries are big, like . . . Ore-Ida size. So a buncha smaller fries would have more surface area and soak up more oil. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
You're right in your assertion that you aren't the whiz, though! 
If they're the same size around then sure, that's not what's making the difference. But that pic has 15 fries in it, so i'm guessing they're just big, unless it's a teeny, teeny, tiny, teeny little fry box!

Of course you want to change the rules!!! I was assuming we were discussing a fry of generally the same physical size... The crinkles would add surface area!
And I maintain that fewer bigger fries with crinkles would still have the greater surface area.
