If the Swedes didn't sell to GM, then I would agree (had 2 pre-GM, 1 GMSaab) GM, in efforts (forced by bureaucrats) to "be green" moved the Cat under the oil pan (seconds quicker cat. op-temps, from start-up). Of course, this configuration carbonizes the oil, caking it to the oil-pump pick-up, starving the engine for oil. Sure, the cars don't hardly ever make it past 60k - and get sent to the crusher- but just imaging all the NOx savings from seconds faster cat warm-up. (Yay for Green thinking!)
Maybe if you change the oil every 2k you can go to 100k+
