Bottom line is, people (mostly men)
like to make lots of noise...and it doesn't even have to be good noise. Look at all the Harley riders who'll spend serious money on exhaust systems just to make their bikes as loud as possible, only to have them wind up sounding like some old clapped-out farm machinery.
It also seems that most people really don't mind having a lot of unnecessary noise around them. Witness a couple of the posts above...
