Well, since he has to attach the alternator ground somewhere, either he attaches it here, or he pulls one of the washers, tightens the nut, and removes the nut in the more common location and uses that stud for the ground wire.
Either way, he doesn't have to worry that he's lost some critical part that attaches here.
