When I bought my '74 I flew to pick it up, then drove home - which took a day and a half. That was dumb, but the car car ran fine with no problems.
Since, and with more knowledge of the car, I have often driven it distances similar to what you suggest. This doesn't mean that my car is special, it sure isn't, but the description you give of your car tells me that you should go for it.
