SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- New census estimates show that minority populations in Utah have grown three times as fast as the white, non-Hispanic population since 2000.

In Salt Lake County, one of every four residents is a minority.

U.S. Census Bureau data, released Thursday, shows minority population in Utah grew by 55 percent between 2000 and 2008. That's three times faster than the 17 percent growth among non-Hispanic whites during that period.

Statewide, 18 percent of Utah residents are now minorities, up from 14 percent in 2000.

State Demographer Juliette Tennert says Utah is beginning to look more like the rest of the nation, in which 34 percent of residents are minorities.

Estimates also show Utah has the highest percentage of its population under age 5 of any state, at 10 percent.
