There are maintainers that just sit on the floor of the passenger compartment and plug into the cigarette lighter socket and maintain the battery without overcharging it. There is even a cutout in the weatherstripping on the under side of the door for an extension cord to be routed through. People have used em for years and didn't hurt a thing. I used one for months at a time and over 4 winters and I have no idea how many years were on the battery before I bought the car.

You really don't want to just disconnect the battery and close the hood to keep out the rodents .... you need the battery to operate the trunk opening unless you have rerouted the emergency trunk opening cable.
