As the former owner of a V70 R, I have to say that this is not great advice for the OP. I know that he wound up buying an almost new Acura, but these threads come up in searches a lot, so I'm saying this for future car shoppers.
Don't get me wrong- I actually really liked my V70 R and it was an awesome car out on the road but the city fuel mileage was horrible and the OP lives in west L.A., which is all stop-and-go with mostly "stop". I had an early one, (1999), but have friends who have had newer models. They are all great looking and perform like a MFer but the fuel mileage has bothered even some very rich friends. No one likes to watch their fuel gauge go down as they're driving. If you do a lot of city driving in L.A., like I do, you can easily spend $500++ on super unleaded a month. Then of course there are brake pads, tires and all of the other things you put in a high performance machine. It's a horseschit choice for a family car.
I like the advice of buying a good Toyota or other practical car for hauling kids and save your cash for a separate fun car.
