Working in government for the last 4-5 years has opened my eyes (and I didn't think I had them shut). There are so many free this, free that, X/Y/Z assistance programs, grants, blah blah blah that it will make your head spin. The general public has no idea how far beyond welfare, WIC and foodstamps this goes. If you need something, you can have it for free... you just need to know how to navigate the BS.
I know a guy that makes 65-70K a year, single guy. He got the state to pay for $6k hearing aides because he told them his hearing deficiencies "could" cost him his job. The "Michigan Works" program has a pot of money they have to distribute each period to save jobs and they got to use his story as a stat. FYI, he has VERY mild hearing issues and there is ZERO chance he would lose his job over it. That's just one story and I know it doesn't prove anything, but it starts your mind thinking "what else is out there?" I'll tell ya, it's crazy.
