Sorry Joe, I really don't know much about the public tours. Never looked into them - I get to wander freely about any time I want.
I used to bring the wife and kids to "family day", so they never have done the tour either. I have heard good things about it, though, and that it is definitely worthwhile. They'll have a good time.
