That's pretty crazy. I've read Alex Roy's book "The Driver" who did it in 31hrs 4mins (with gas receipts and gps tracking to prove it) and it seemed like they were near the limit. Making up 2 hours and averaging 98mph is nuts.
Richard Rawlings, the Gas Monkey Garage guy claims to have the record at 31 hrs 59 minutes.
He claims Roy's record is not legit because he did not follow the route of the original Cannonball.

Rawlings might be correct, though I think at this point the goal is as fast as possible, no matter the route, as long as it's NYC- LA.
In his book Roy chronicles the whole Gumball world, including his friendship/rivalry with Rawlings. I found it to very entertaining.
