If I recall correctly, the original Cannonball runners did not follow a set route. Part of the strategy was picking a route that would yield the quickest time. First car to arrive at the Portifino Inn won...no matter which way you went.
Roy admits to hitting a 158MPH top speed in the Merc on his run for the record. The winners of the second Cannonball, Brock Yates & Dan Gurney, claim to have pushed their Ferrari 365GTB to nearly 175MPH somewhere in New Mexico on their 35h 54m run back in '71.
