I have some of the same problems. I have a rattling tranny too. I also have a grinding bearing type noise comming from the gear shift area. Both go away when the clutch is depressed. I have heard that the tranny is noisy anyway on these cars because of a idle shaft, especially on high mileage cars (I have 250,000 on mine). The tranny rattles a bit, but the grinding coming from the front, could that be the pilot bearing or the that tube? are there bearings in the tube or is it echoing noise from the tranny? Has anyone tried any oil additives that might quiet worn trans? If the pilot bearing is bad, can I wait till the clutch needs doing? Thanks.
