My grandparents and my mom always called Nov 11 "Armistice Day" and "Carol's birthday", my sister birthday as well.
There was a show on the Military Channel I believe that had the stories of the last soldiers killed on Nov 11. Some due to arrogant commanders trying to take the last yard of territory from the enemy.
