Not a big Tom Cruise fan either, but when you read what he actually said it bears almost no resemblance to how it was spun.
Evidently he was being accused of "abandonment" relative to his daughter (custody proceedings) because he was overseas on a movie shoot and didn't attend her first day of kindergarten or something. He made the analogy that if that (missing his daughter's event due to being overseas on a brutal schedule-intensive movie shoot) was grounds for abandonment, then people serving in the military should be guilty of abandonment also.
Somehow that was spun as "acting is just as hard as fighting in wars".
