The fuel pump cable plug can be a cause of problems as a bit of oxidisation on the contacts will stop the pump from running. Pop open the connector, clean both sets of contacts, spray a bit of WD in there and clip back together. You should be able to hear the pump run when you turn the ignition on.
although these pumps are generally reliable in operation, they really do not like just standing around...
