Adam gives good advice. A colleague recently picked up a 97 with 35k miles for $23k. Silver with a black interior, stick, nice shape. I took it for a drive and was quite impressed. The power comes on lower in the rpm range than my 911, but it flattens out above 5500, where the 911 continues to pull like crazy. The handling was excellent, power was better than I expected, brakes are phenomenal. I believe this was the 201hp version. I'll bet an S (with 252 hp) is a blast to drive. I've seen 2000 S's advertised in the high 30's in this area.
