I have been a bit of an audiophile since before I could drive. I bought a rega planar 2 in 1995 as a sophmore in college. I still have and use it though I have upgraded it with acrylic parts and a MC Benz micro cartridge.
When I was younger I used to go to thrift stores and discount book stores looking to "score" good records. My experience is that these records tend to be beat up. I would often find good 7-s and 80s rock in decent condition but these tended to be recorded poorly anyways.
Unless you enjoy the hunt, I'd rather just buy reissued new records these days. The worst thing is my dad has thousands of fantastic records but they are mostly in bad shape. I wish he would have taken care of them.
