I get 40 days of vacation a year not including the 7 days of paid holidays.
Most employees are limited to retaining a maximum of those 40 days. If you don't use it you lose it. We used to be able carry whatever we don't use until you retire and you just take off how ever many days you have of vacation before your retirement day. People that accumulated vacation before the 40 day policy are limited to accumulating whatever vacate you had saved up when the new limit. My limit is 82 days of vacation and that's how many I have saved up. I could work only 4 days a week and still have 70 days at the end of a year.
Friend of mine worked at Apple Computer. They got 40 days a year AND after 8 years you had to take 4 weeks at once off with pay that is not considered part of your vacation time. He said they called it a sabbatical. You could cash in whatever vacation time you had stored up at your pay rate 1 week before the sabbatical. If you did not take your sabbatical by the 1st of December on your 8th year, you were not allowed on the Apple grounds until after January 1st. He said it was supposed to keep employees from getting job burn out.
We also get sick days, but you cannot use it for only one day, it only kicks in if you are sick more than one day and you have to prove you went to see a doctor. Not sure how that is supposed to work. Since I was put on Temporary Disability with my foot, I got full pay and did not use any of my sick days. I have 60 sick days.
