The only way I view athletes as "role models" is as talking points with my son. He's 6, but says he's determined to be a fighter (think UFC). He's been in Tae Kwon Do for about a year, and has some obvious natural talent (for which I claim genetically comes from me--whether I'm right or not can be debated, lol). I often talk to him about the hard work, sacrifice, etc. that a professional athlete in any sport has to put in to get to that level.
But for what they do or say OFF the playing field of their choosing, I couldn't give a damn.
I wouldn't EVER look to actors/musicians as role models--most of them are whacked in the brain. My oldest daughter (13) used to LOVE Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus). When she started going the druggy/slut route, I figured it would be wise to have a talk with my daughter about this behavior. She promptly told me that she likes the music and the show, but she thinks Miley isn't a very good person. It amazes me the wisdom that child possesses..
