IIRC, the big bills were never in real circulation. They were only used from bank to bank to transfer funds. That is why they are very rare and worth $$$$.
What is a $500 bill worth? It would be cool to get one of those. My aunt who is a retired banker said she's only seen a few in her lifetime.
Edit: Just checked and the $10k bill was the largest bill in general circulation. Damn! Who would carry those around?
